This is a terrible idea! Urban sprawl significantly increases costs for everyone through required new infrastructure and services and the perpetual maintenance and operating costs of the infrastructure and services. It is also horrible for the environment and handicaps our transportation systems. If you want to reduce the costs and increase supply of housing you should be increasing density targets, not reducing them!
