I am writing to register my strong opposition to proposal ERO #026-0414. As a resident of Ontario, I am deeply concerned that these proposed changes undermine local municipal oversight and threaten our environment. I object to this proposal for the following reasons:
Loss of Municipal Oversight: Removing the requirement for Environmental Screening when a facility changes its "service area" or waste fill rates actively strips away local municipal planning authority and ignores the clear will of local councils and residents.
Massive Community Impacts: Expanding a landfill or recycling facility's service area to accept waste from a broader region fundamentally transforms the scale of operations. Communities face immediate, massive increases in daily heavy truck traffic, noise, and environmental risks that must not be "streamlined" out of proper review.
Dangerous Regulatory Gaps: Because the passage of Bill 5 already stripped away the comprehensive provincial Environmental Assessment process for specific sites like the Dresden landfill, further reducing oversight through this proposal leaves our local water tables, ecosystems, and rural infrastructure entirely unprotected.
I strongly urge that the Ministry reject these amendments and instead uphold strict, transparent environmental screening processes that respect municipal zoning and protect local communities.
Thank you!
