I would like to suggest that more of Wasaga Beach Provincial Park lands are returned to a natural environment state. Combing the beach should really be limited to only the area of Beach 1 right in front of the stores and restaurants. The re-naturalization that has occurred in the areas protected for Piping Plover is not only important, and provincially rare, dune habitat, but it also looks very aesthetically pleasing. In my time working as a Piping Plover monitoring volunteer, I have received several comments from tourists that the naturalized dune areas remind them of the Atlantic coastlines - like Cape Cod. I have never had a tourist tell me that they oppose the naturalization efforts for the Piping Plover. Unfortunately, the long-time locals seem to be adverse to change and like to rake the beach, but really they are the minority of those using the Park and spending their money in the area.
I think that there is a real opportunity to make Wasaga Beach Provincial Park a really beautiful and functional natural beach environment. The plans could be modeled on what has been done at the Pinery Provincial Park and at Southhampton. This kind of re-naturalization would facilitate Endangered Piping Plover habitat and provincially and globally rare Great Lakes sand dune communities and plant species to flourish.
