It is really important to me…

It is really important to me and, I expect, the residents/taxpayers of Waterloo Region that our drinking water sources, artesian wells/acquifers, are protected from gravel pits excavating below the water table. Certainly one of the central conditions for the acceptability of the establishment of any new gravel pits being planned is a pledge from the developer(s) that they will not jeopardize nearby acquifers by excavating below the water table. To my horror, the Mayor of Wilmot this week revealed that our Township Council had authorized with Provincial approval a township gravel pit to do this very thing! We need legislation to protect our water sources: failure to do so is only going to create increased taxes for municipalities charged with providing clean drinking water for its residents. In this case, the cost of Ontario being "open for business" is too high - the cost to our collective quality of life and the financial cost to keep doing more (Waterloo Region is growing, growing, growing) with less (fewer fresh water sources available). Please, please, please act to protect our acquifers from this quite unnecessary practice of digging beneath the water table for aggregate.
