Information regarding the proposal for a waste processing/transfer plant at 633 Coronation Drive has not been adequately communicated with the surrounding communities affected by the development.
Concerns about its effects on the health and safety of nearby residents have not been addressed by reports that were only made available by direct request (and are currently housed on a web page where the link generates an error).
I do not live in the area that was detailed in the reports, but the effects of this development and the activity generated by it will be felt by those of us who live in the neighbourhoods between Coronation Drive and Highway 401.
This is not a 'heavily industrialized' or 'rural' area, as described in the documents. The development site is surrounded by residential communities who share very human concerns about environmental and health impacts of waste processing and the transportation associated with it.
Documents that have been made available do not include human impacts from truck routes to and from Highway 401, while only addressing capacity of the routes that immediately surround the project site. They do not include the effects of increased local truck traffic on existing congestion at the Morningside/Lawrence/Kingston triangle, or northbound on Port Union Road. They do not mention the effects of hundreds of trucks on routes that are used by school buses, local transit and GO Transit commuters, and are lined by shopping plazas and many intersecting residential streets.
I would ask the Ministry to consider that this site is in fact located in a suburban community that is only accessible by roads that could become heavy truck routes for transporting City waste. This is not a suitable location for the project.
The surrounding communities deserve more transparency around this project. Please conduct studies that go beyond meeting regulatory targets. Meet with our elected representatives and residents to share information that will explain the human impacts on our community, and only then receive informed comments.
