I am submitting these comments to express my full support of the Proposal Notice identified as Environmental Registry of Ontario (ERO)# 019-1806, “Proposal to expand the live capture of wild raptors (birds of prey) by licensed falconers”, posted on August 24, 2020.I am a non-falconer and my association with falconry began with my husband’s passion for birds of prey and ultimately led him to becoming a falconer. People living within urban centers in general are disengaged with our natural surroundings and I was one of those people. But my experience with falconry has provided me with an opportunity to encounter nature in an intimate and natural setting. My relationship with falconry has made me acutely aware of the stresses on our environment and the ecological complexity of our world. I’m totally awestruck when I see a hawk/falcon flown by a falconer (my husband and fellow falconers), not just in the beauty of the flight but the bond and cooperative nature of the relationship. The intensity of the hawk’s gaze and the spectacular maneuvers of flight are images that remain ingrained within my mind. Falconers have played important roles in raptor conservation and have been key contributors to the recovery of the Peregrine Falcon and thus have been role models for the general public. The proposed opportunity within ERO# 019-1806 would enhance our knowledge of birds of prey and strengthen wildlife and habitat conservation which is a proactive approach to natural resource management. Falconry has also had a positive impact on our children, in a way that could not be conveyed through a formal academic setting, and this I’m very grateful. Through their experiences with falconry our children have developed a profound appreciation and respect of our natural resources and the environment. My children and I have become aware of the necessity of conservation and have learned to be responsible stewards of our natural resources. The selflessness, patience and total dedication the falconer has for his/her bird are virtues that every parent would want to instill in their children.

The Art of Falconry has truly enriched our family and foresee that this cultural heritage will continue to encourage future generations to become conservationists. Thank you for the opportunity to comment on this proposal which when enacted will definitely enhance the falconry experience.
