I support the adjustments and addition of invasive species not yet in Ontario. I think you should have added many more species to the invasive species list and required further care of watercraft to ensure that larve, eggs and fish diseases are not being spread. You should have followed the excellent science and policy in BC where they require boats to be rinsed then dried and cannot be transported accross boarders without being cleaned. These measures are not enough.
I enjoy fishing, hiking, boating and really value pristine landscapes. These lascapes are threatened by invasive species. The presence of one can sometimes cause an invasion meltdown (where one invasive species can change the ecosystem dynamoics making it easier for others to invade) further disrupting the ecosystem.
These measures are not enough. I further suggest that more money be spent on enforcing these regulations. As I read the policy, it sounds like they are a series of suggestions, already suggested by the invasive species council, that will only be followed by those who are educated about invasive species and really really care. Ontario must invest in educating the public about these species and enforce rules they set.
In my neighbourhood there are several speices along roads, in parks and conservation areas which are not being controlled and are acting as a source for the community. Giant hogweed and wild parsnip line trails and roadsides where i walk my dog. The township and the conservation authorities do not have yhe funds required to address these, they need monetary support and guidance from the government of Ontario.
Ontario is home to beautiful ecosystems, but the current Goverment of Ontario is not doing enough to protect them.
Thank for slightly updating the 2007 act. Please continue to listen to the MNRF scientists and Invasive Species Council. I am willing to pay, with taxes, to protect, restore and rehabilitate our natural ecosystems; invasive species pervention and managment are important.
