There is no debate about climate change: we know we need to ac now, act fast and act big. Carbon pricing is an essential (albeit not sufficient) tool to address the very real threat of climate change. By creating incentives to reduce GHG emissions, carbon pricing works. Decades of research and a broad consensus among policy analysts and economists across the political spectrum support pricing as a cost-effective way to lower greenhouse gas emissions. Internalizing the costs of climate change is basic market economics.
The cap-and-trade program was designed to help Ontario fight climate change and reward businesses that reducing their greenhouse gas emissions.
The current government, which did not win a majority of the vote, is intending to scrap the cap-and-trade system without any plan.
The cancellation of cap-and-trade presumably also means the cancellation of the many important programs it funds.
Getting rid of the well-functioning cap-and-trade system, without an alternative in sight, is a huge mistake with enormous costs for the environment as well as the economy. It is a financially and environmentally reckless decision.
