The province's own Housing Affordability Task Force stated plainly earlier this year that a land shortage is not the cause of our housing crisis. The task force's report said there is enough land in existing built up areas and other undeveloped lands that are outside of the Greenbelt.
Given that there is enough land elsewhere to build housing, I find the government's justification for this bill to be unfounded.
Furthermore, continuing to expand urban boundaries outward instead of densifying will not increase affordability. In fact, it will make public services more expensive. And I doubt any housing built in the Greenbelt would be affordable.
This proposal is unnecessary. It has disastrous ecological consequences and will not help to increase affordability. I respectfully request that it be scrapped.
