Urban sprawl and habitat destruction continues to be a major issue. There are so many properties within cities that are abandoned and instead of cleaning these up and repurposing them for residential or commercial use, it's easier just to make it easier and cheaper for developers to destroy our natural spaces. As many people discovered during Covid, our natural spaces actually have great value as places of recreation and places to benefit our mental health as a refugee from our busy and stressful lives. Serious declines in species populations, and even extirpations of species from our province are terrible indicators of the health of our environment. These properties have so much more value than just as land to develop.
