I oppose this proposal as I do not believe the provincial government should be making these decisions. Local official plans and zoning are the responsibility of the municipality and should remain so. They are best suited for this.
I am from Hamilton and feel that Hamilton is doing a very good job of providing land for development. They are also encouraging additional residential units but in a manner that is appropriate, taking into consideration the impact of these units on city services.
Additional residential units can impact parking, garbage collection and traffic. Only the municipality is aware of which locations can support these additional units. Additional units close to the new LRT will not need as much parking as an additional unit which is on the outskirts of the urban boundary.
It is also important that the municipality be allowed to dictate a minimum unit size.
Affordable rental housing should be based on the average wage in the community. Those wages should be able to pay for housing that is adequate. I don't think that creating units that are smaller (ie. 200 sq feet) is what Ontarians mean when they say they want affordable housing.
