The reduction of greenbelt in efforts to build more housing is completely unneccessary.
Doubling down on the mentality of growing the city by sprawl, which helped cause the housing crisis in the first place, will only continue the cycle of and grow the housing crisis in the long term.
Sacrificing the greenbelt is a way of servicing the NIMNYism mentality - where much of the city (90% in case of Toronto) have bylaws that will not allow for even mid-density housing.
The government should be taking necessary steps to begin changing the main contributors to the housing crisis, like lack of regulation in the housing market and restrictive zoning, instead of scapegoating other issues like building on the greenbelt or heritage designated properties.
Allowing multiple units in a housing lot was a good start, and further changes to zoning that will allow a incremental and more fairly distributed density is what will add up to meaningful change in the long term.
