Building in the greenbelt and more urban sprawl is not a solution to the housing crisis. What we need is more density in already developed areas around the Golden Horseshoe.
There are many lands that are underdeveloped with large expanses of brown fields and lawn that are within urban areas. Just have a drive down any highway around Toronto or Hamilton and you will see many areas where housing can go. Building in these areas will generate more housing with less/already existing infrastructure, speeding up the process. These already developed areas are closer to existing roads, public utilities, transit, businesses, shopping, and work.
Building in the greenbelt creates more sprawl that is an inefficient use of land. It creates a burden to the province's finances since the property taxes in these areas do not cover the province's expenses in roads, infrastructure, and public services. And, most of all, only relatively rich people can afford to live in these single family homes far from the city with their car dependent lifestyle.
Building in the greenbelt will be a huge mistake that many generation of Ontarians will have to pay the price for.
