I am opposed to any expansion of the municipal boundaries in the area covered by the Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan. As you know from reading the plan, these areas are protected for the express purpose of protecting the quality of the water that people in the Greater Golden Horseshoe drink. Knowing what we do, why would we deliberately degrade the water quality that millions depend on for their life and health. If this water is sufficiently degraded there will have to be billions spent on gray infrastructure to clean it up to potable standards.
The ecological services provided by the Oak Ridges Moraine are worth billions of dollars every year. Once you start chipping away at protections for farmland and natural areas, it is only a matter of time before they are all gone. In addition, putting homes so far from urban centres where the jobs are located means long hours of commute for putative homeowners in the area. Ontario needs homes near their jobs and where infrastructure is already in place, so that we can build smart, densified, efficient, resilient communities.
I recommend that the Ontario Government strengthen protections for lands on the Oak Ridges Moraine for the benefit of Ontarians now and into the future.
