I am an Architect in Hamilton and see so many opportunities for infil housing, utilizing diverse housing models, and sizes. I understand that there is not one solution and it will take a diverse set of initiatives to address the housing issue.

I am not anti-developers, we work with several. Currently we are working on an infill project six stories with 48 units. These units are small in size and would address many of the issues that have been highlighted. We have been working on this project for many years (2011), and it has been a very difficult process trying to obtain municipal approvals for the construction of the project, especially Site Plan Approval. I understand that the answer is not to eliminate the developer fees and complete process, however municipalities need to encourage and support this type on development working as a team with the Consultants and developer. The system is broken. We typically all want the same results.

It is so discouraging to see the drive towards sprawl and development of greenfield and worse expansion into the greenbelt. It does not have to happen to solve this crisis. Developers should not be supported in this direction, to build more large single family housing with no transportation or servicing infrastructure. This has limited ability to actually target those in need of housing. I understand there frustration. Both sides need to come to the table to ensure cohesive and positive development.
