I am writing to voice my strong opposition to development in the Greenbelt.
- This is unnecessary - there is sufficient land within urban boundaries.
- It is unconstitutional in that no due consultation with First Nations has occurred which is required by the constitution.
- It will increase flood risks by paving over lands and wetland areas. And now that Conservation Authorities have been restricted in their ability to assess the impacts of development we can only expect these flood risks to worsen.
- The Greenbelt is one of the most biodiverse regions in Canada and development there flies in the face of our duty to protect biodiversity.
- It will promote car-dependent sprawl which impacts public health and Ontario's ability to meet its (far too weak) climate targets.
- It is corrupt. The fact that donors to the PC party are benefiting from the rezoning of lands they recently purchased to the tune of billions should be investigated. Governments are supposed to serve the people not to enable colossal private profits for the few at the expense of the many.
