Limited clean drinking water is an abstract concept to many in Southern Ontario. We live in the fertile plain between the Oak Ridges Moraine and Lake Ontario. The Oak Ridges Moraine absorbs rainfall and snow melt to feed the rivers that flow into the lake. During times of low rainfall we can draw clean drinking water from these stores. The Oak Ridges Moraine is a natural defence system against drought and flooding exacerbated by climate change. Previous Ontario provincial and municipal governments recognised the importance of the Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Act, 2001 and required that planning and land use conform to the protections listed in the conservation plan. Bill 23 removes the checks and balances put in place by previous governments to protect our water supply. There is no point in having more homes in Ontario if they have no clean water to deliver to them. There is already enough zoned land for housing within the provinces municipal boundaries we don't have to take land away from the Oak Ridges Moraine or the Greenbelt.
