Thank you for the opportunity to provide comment. I sincerely hope that my comments along with other concerned citizens will be taken into consideration.
There was a catch phrase "Good things grow in Ontario". If the proposed highways and unfettered attacks on our collective environment are allowed to continue--the phrase will have to be changed to "Good Things can no longer Grow in Ontario". People are concerned about food prices now--where will we get food in the future when we no longer have viable--and affordable farmland in Ontario? From drought plagued California? Imagine the cost to carbon footprint and peoples wallet. How secure is this plan for food?
The Ford conservatives have unleashed a death by one thousand cuts strategy, benefiting his friends--developers-- to the detriment of everyone and everything else. And they are just getting started. If the proposed highways are allowed to go through-wetlands and key water sources will be permanently impacted-you cannot pave over a wetland, dig a hole elsewhere and call it a wetland. These are intricate ecosystems that take a very long time to establish associated communities of life.
More highways=more sprawl=more cars=more carbon released=faster climate change + greater more rapid biodiversity loss. Ford's red herring ploy of building "affordable housing" is not representative of the truth. None of these planned sprawling 1950's style "developments" will be affordable.
They have made countless changes to legislation since coming to Queens Park--removing protections from wetlands, greenbelt, endangered species, removing costs to developers via development charges, removing powers from conservation authorities so that they essentially conserve--in name only, removing the need for environmental assessment for things like--highways and hydro corridors--undermining municipal planning to force sprawl into farmland-- and that was just this week.
The damage being done to the environment and the further catastrophic damage that is planned will be irreversible. This is unconscionable. People are incensed and in despair over what is happening in Ontario-but also, it is clear Ford and his cronies don't care.
He should Keep his Greenbelt Promise and reverse the decision to destroy Ontario forever. He and his allies will have a legacy allright-one of widespread and permanent destruction ti the environment and what was Ontario.
