ERO #019-4219 proposes that transportation, including highway and rail “of any length”, and electricity transmissions be moved to a “streamlined EA process”, known as Class Environmental Assessments (Class EAs). Streamlining such processes will render them into window dressing. The federal government committed to meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 as put forth by United Nations, and the actions of our provincial government which erode environmental accountability go directly against multiple goals.

Given the real dangers of climate change and the increasing numbers of species at risk, Ontario needs robust, arms' length environmental assessments of any projects affecting our green spaces going forward. Already Conservation Authorities across the province have been made ineffective by the Ontario Conservative Government. ERO #019-4219 further erodes an environmental assessment process that is necessary to ensure environmental sustainability for future generations of Ontarians.
