This company operated a facility that killed a man due to poor operations (https://apple.news/A1MCLL1roQ6KvuNP4KFUflg), contaminated soil and sediment in the surrounding area as a result of the accident , (https://globalnews.ca/news/9537913/environmental-impact-ssonix-fire-st-…), previously faced MOL labour orders (see first article), and has directors that are facing 84 charges due to the accident (see first article).

Allowing this company to even apply for an environmental compliance approval is an embarrassment and slap in the face to the people of Ontario and the deceased’s wife. Given the lack of safety and existing charges, I strongly question proponents morality and willingness to operate within the requirements of an ECA without consistent enforcement (which we all know the MECP lacks), and would not trust them despite whatever their consultant says from a modelling and/or mitigation standpoint. A hazardous waste facility that kills people should not be allowed to continue to operate from a health and safety and environmental standpoint.

Additionally, the ministry has not specified the type of waste to be handled by the company. Presumably based on the accident, it is some sort of characteristic waste (I.e. ignitable). Should the MECP decide to grant this ECA, it is strongly recommended that the waste handled by the facility not be something with major acute effects.
