While I think some aspects of this proposal (not moving bait from southern Ontario to prevent invasive species) are a good idea, many of the other proposals would have a negative outcome in Northwestern Ontario. The zone I live in and buy bait from is different than the zone our camp is in. We already have a 3 hour drive to camp and do not pass any other bait stores that would be in the proper zone. Many of the bait stores in Kakabeka that are on the way to camp get their bait from our camp zone already, as it is easier to get bait from those lakes and many people fishing bring the bait back to the original zone to fish with. For my family to get bait we would have an extra hour and a half drive to Ignace to buy our bait instead of picking it up on the way out. I also think enforcing bait rules would be a waste of MNR officers time, especially with their budget already being cut by a province that does not seem concerned with keeping traditions alive and allowing people to interact with their natural environment. These new proposals would have a negative effect on fishing in the Northwest. I think it would reduce numbers of fishing licenses sold and families enjoying fishing trips, as it would be such an inconvenience to simply purchase bait. I hope that the people responsible for making these changes have an understanding of the size and challenges of Northwestern Ontario.
