Hi There,
As a citizen in Ontario who votes I was very disheartened by the Ontario governments decision to break their campaign promises of not touching the greenbelt. While I fully recognize the need for more homes in order to address our present housing crisis, developing single family homes on some of the most fertile farmland in the country seems an extremely shortsighted move. Many of my peers feel the same way, and actions like this factor strongly into their ballot decisions.
These homes would require massive infrastructure growth, from roads and waterworks to garbage collection and electrical - infrastructure that is already in place in many southern Ontario towns that could be developed more practically.
There is space for over 2 million new homes within urban municipalities without having to encroach on the greenbelt (see link). Homes in these towns could promote economic growth, give residents fast access to hospitals and schools and help preserve the huge value the greenbelt provides for residents of southern Ontario. We need medium and high density housing close to jobs, not low density suburbs an hour commute away form anything.
I was pleasantly surprised to hear that the Ontario government has decided to roll back some of their decisions regarding the greenbelt. I hope that they realized from the massive outpouring of public sentiment that most people in Ontario recognize that you do not need to develop these green spaces in order to promote housing.
Thank you.
