Re: Proposed aggregate pit at Old Trestle Rd in Killaloe, Hagarty and Richards.
People come to Renfrew County, and Killaloe, Hagarty and Richards (KHR) to experience the pristine beauty of the land. Year after year tourism to the area is growing, and the route along Highway 60 is well travelled in high season. Tourists come to experience our lakes and forests, to see the leaves change in the fall, and come snowmobiling in winter. Having a 109+ acre aggregate pit on the main route into town, and proceed without constructing a visual and sound barrier would be a terrible step backwards in preserving the areas beauty. The area’s best golf course is across the road, and other local events take place nearby. Having a treed setback, and a berm installed, is common sense. We should be looking to keep the area as natural and healthy as possible while extracting what is needed.
There are other aggregate pits along major road ways in this province. Many have constructed berms and natural barriers so you wouldn’t even know that they exist. This is an opportunity to have a thriving aggregate business, and do the right thing by the community, and its visitors, by preserving natural sightlines and installing sound barriers. We need to be forward thinking for long-term prosperity.
