It's ironic to me that as the Conservatives pave over more of our farmland/wetlands/animal habitats, that they are considering allowing these types of snares to prevent wolves and coyotes (whose habitats are being destroyed) from eating farm animals (It's likely, of course, that they are also thinking of monetary profit, i.e. the infamous fur industry).
As someone who has worked on a farm, I'm not unsympathetic to the farmers who lose livestock to predators. But as long as you're destroying their habitats, animals will come closer and closer looking for food.
Politicians in the other parties have (sometimes rightfully) been accused of not being transparent in their deals and decisions; the Conservatives must adhere to transparency as well.
These restraints the Conservatives are proposing are NOT certified as acceptable in the Agreement on National Humane Trapping Standards. So why should WE believe they are acceptable? Long ago are the days when I would simply "take the government's word" on something.
Where is the scientific proof? Anyone who has done any research on this subject or who has seen the fear and pain of an animal in a trap knows that snares are cruel.
Other countries have banned ALL snares, and I believe that we need to do the same.
As Mahatma Gandhi said, "The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated."
He said nothing about the almighty dollar.
That doesn't say much about our country OR this government.
Release the research behind this proposal so that the public can make truly informed decisions.
If you keep ignoring the public's opinions, you will likely lose the next election.
