I have a number of concerns re the proposed changes to the trapping regulations. I would be most interested in seeing the research behind this decision - none has been provided. Without proper supporting scientific investigation and research no changes should be made as there is no way to know what the potential impacts of the changes will be on impacted animals (targeted or non-targeted species.
Canada is a party to the Agreement on International Humane trapping standards - relaxing cable restraints are not certified traps as per that organization. it is my understanding that Ontario is a part of Canada and is thus subject to these standards. Furthermore many countries ban snares for trapping all together; why is Ontario bilking the international trend and putting animal welfare at risk?
Ontario needs to start doing proper research before making decisions so as to be sure all aspects of the proposed changes are known.
