Please don't do this!! These traps are already bad enough, but these guidelines just make them worse. Killing wildlife like this is unreasonable, unnecessary and unacceptable.
We all live on this planet and we must share the land with other living beings, not just plow through to make room for us, then get upset when wildlife is living around us! Of course coyotes and foxes are living here, we've taken their home. This does NOT mean we should start killing them!
The province needs to publish the research findings it references on the ERO page so that the public can make informed comments on this consultation. I'd really like to know how any of this trapping benefits anyone.
Laws around trapping need to prioritize animal welfare and should be informed by current, peer-reviewed science, not guidelines created by the commercial fur industry, since this industry is going to create guidelines that better their industry, not care for animals or take any animal rights into consideration. The commercial fur industry doesn't believe animals even have rights, just that they are objects to be killed and used for fashion.
Relaxing cable restraints are not certified traps under the Agreement on International Humane Trapping Standards, which Canada is a party to. The province must adhere to these rules, or we must apply to the Federal government to step in and enforce
Killing and restraining snares should not be used to trap wildlife in Ontario as research has shown that they result in negative animal welfare outcomes for both target and non-target animals. Snares are not certified traps under the Agreement on International Humane Trapping Standards and should be prohibited in the province.
Many countries around the world have banned snares entirely and it’s time for the province to end the use of these devices in Ontario as well.
Farmers should be encouraged to use non-lethal, predator friendly farming methods instead of trapping wildlife. Farmers are important, but so is wildlife. Each have the right to live life, farmers making income, wildlife by just living. Farmers have other tools at their disposal to use, to deter wildlife from their crops or animals. There are many ways to protect their investments, other than just taking the simple and cruel route of just killing wildlife.
