New Idea sound good but the point system has made a lot of older hunters stop moose hunting in our area. I just turned 55 and have yet to hunt moose with my two son's and based on our points within our camp I may never get to hunt moose with them before my time is up. Our camp is in WMU 47 and based on what I have read it is one of the largest WMU for moose. It may help to section this area in multiple areas like WMU 76 for example. Calf hunting should be eliminated in all WMU's and also the Cow/Calf tags for a few years and then introduce cow tags only. Monitor the numbers and slowly introduce a minimal number of calf tags. Leave thcalves alone since they are the future and already have enough things against them, wolves, coyotes and bears. Not to mention a lot of hunters I know are only focusing on calf tags now because of the low points and in some cases they are readily available in various WMU's.
It is mentioned in the article about allowing the residents to apply for the extra tags. I think it should also be open to an astablished hunt camp. Camps pay taxes along with other fees and should be included in this extra draw. Consideration should also be given to possibly having a draw for large groups, simular to the old way and if someone gets a tag that individual losses his points and starts over. This would give a number of people the oportunity to hunt moose. A few camps in the area haven't hunted moose since the new draw started.
The new method may appear good via the data being viewed but it is not benificial for hunters. It does limit the number of tags a group receives which is good. There were groups/road hunters in our area with two or three bull tags and calf tags with the old method so the new method did clean this up.
Thank you for the opportunity to comment on this topic and I'm looking forward to changes that are benificial to hunters and wildlife.
