Introducing bike lanes on major arteries has been shown to reduce congestion and provide meaningful alternatives to using cars. The goal should be to reduce car demand to alleviate traffic congestion, which is what bike lanes serve to do.
The economic benefit of adding bike lanes to Bloor St has been studied and proven. Investing in bike lanes bring economic and public health value, as shown in one study in NYC.
This bill will accomplish the exact opposite of its original purpose. It's a waste of taxpayer money for a jurisdiction which does not fall under Ontario's mandate anyway. Adding more driving lanes has been shown time and time again to only encourage demand for cars and will not improve congestion.
This bill will not work in the long-term and neither the short-term. The cost to remove these essential lanes cannot be reasonably justified!
