This proposal is reversing hard fought progress to bring bike lanes and connected networks of bike lanes to our communities. Cars cause congestion, not bikes. Reducing traffic congestion is about giving people more transportation options, not fewer.
The benefits of bike lanes outweigh the perceived problems. Bike lanes are good for business; riders can easily make stops, save time getting places, and see new places to stop along the way. They’re good for the environment. We want a greener future for our children who should be able to safely bike to school and work. Bike lanes are good for public and personal health. Let’s keep people healthy and out of hospitals and the health care system. They give us freedom and mobility. Bike lanes save lives. When I think to go somewhere, the decision to take my bike is affected by whether the route has a bike lane. The decision to have my child bike with me depends on the existence of safe bike lanes.
