There are thousands more people living in downtown Toronto every year. A good number of them rides a bike when the TTC is not a better option (and it's often not). Bike lanes encourage them to do so, which is also a community-builder.
Having dedicated bike lanes makes driving downtown less attractive, so fewer cars drive there. If we're ever going to achieve any climate goal, having more cars on the roads won't help.
