Banning bike lanes to relieve traffic congestion shows a profound misunderstanding of how urban transportation works. After all the DVP is congested and there are no bike lanes.
Bike lanes are built to provide safe transportation to the ever increasing number of cyclists in the city. As developers build more and more downtown condominiums with virtually no car parking and plenty of bike parking the number of cyclists will only increase.
The real solution to traffic congestion is improved public transit and congestion pricing. This misguided initiative by the Government of Ontario will make it the laughing stock of the world in which progressive cities such as New York, Paris, London, Montreal, Copenhagen…….develop more balanced transportation systems to create safer, more livable cities not dominated by the automobile.
