I am commenting in my capacity as a board member for the Mimico Residents Association, where I a coordinate a working group tasked with monitoring the Grand Central Mimico development process and seeking to ensure that the hard work undertaken in two previous agreements is respected and maintained as the process is re-initiated for a third time. This comment reflects the consensus of that working group.
The Mimico community is eager to see this keystone site developed in accordance with the priorities secured in the original Van Dyk agreement: a fully accessible GO station, dedicated affordable/non-market housing units, green space, dedicated GO parking, and pedestrian/cycle bridge over Royal York.
In light of the collapse of Van Dyk, we are encouraged that the province is taking steps to make it easier for a replacement project to advance, and we therefore support the MZO repeal.
We look forward to working collaboratively with the province, the city, and other stakeholders to ensure a new project gets off the ground as quickly as possible, in a manner that delivers on those priorities and allows us to create a bold new transit-oriented community in the heart of Mimico.
