I am writing to express my deep concern about the proposed changes to Ontario’s Endangered Species Act. These changes appear to prioritize short-term economic interests over the long-term protection of our province’s most vulnerable species and ecosystems. Weakening the role of scientific experts and giving increased discretion to political decision-makers undermines the credibility and effectiveness of the Act, which was created to prevent extinction and support species recovery based on science, not convenience.
Particularly troubling is the proposal to allow developers to pay into a fund instead of taking direct action to protect habitats. This approach turns conservation into a transactional process and opens the door to unchecked habitat destruction with no guarantee of real environmental benefit. Habitat loss is the leading cause of species decline, and these changes would only accelerate that trend at a time when urgent action is needed to halt biodiversity loss.
Ontario’s natural heritage is not a burden—it is a source of identity, pride, and resilience. I urge you to reject these changes and instead strengthen the Endangered Species Act by investing in science-based conservation, ensuring timely protections for species at risk, and supporting land-use planning that balances economic development with ecological responsibility. The decisions we make today will define the kind of province we leave to future generations.
