The Sydenham river is a crucial waterway for many ecosystems and communities. The Sydenham river provides a home for a variety of animals, most of which are some of Ontario‘s rarest species. Like the Eastern fox snake, Pugnose Minnow, and the Eastern spiny softshell turtle. If the York 1 proposed dump is constructed, The close proximity to the Sydenham river poses great potential risk to the ecosystem and wildlife that inhabits it. The dump is likely to result in harmful chemicals and waste being leached into the soil and waterways. This is especially probable due to the heightened amount of precipitation Dresden has been experiencing throughout this year. And is predicted to experience exponentially due to the effects of global warming. Destructive chemicals, being leached into the Sydenham river would eradicate the critical ecosystem and bring the endangered species residing in the river closer to the brink of extinction.
