Water is for Life, Not Profit. Permits must not be transferable.
Ontario’s current rules rightly require that a new owner must apply for a new Permit to Take Water (PTTW). This process ensures:
· Environmental assessment of changing conditions;
· Public consultation and transparency;
· Review of purpose, volume, and ecological risks;
· Adherence to Indigenous rights and duty to consult.
Allowing automatic permit transfers bypasses all of these safeguards.
We may want to ignore the growing water shortages in Asia and Europe because they are "far away" but we just have to look south to see the problem on our doorstep. "Major rivers, such as the Colorado River; lakes, such as Lake Mead; and the country’s aquifers are strained more than ever." https://www.asce.org/publications-and-news/civil-engineering-source/art…
And we ARE already feeling it in Canada: "The issue is a pressing concern in Canada, set to play an increasingly significant role in our future. It affects the availability of drinking water, agriculture, industry, and ecosystems. In some regions, it leads to drought and famine; in others, conflicts arise over water rights and access, underscoring the urgency and complexity of addressing water scarcity." https://www.wsp.com/en-ca/insights/
We may argue about the causes of climate change but we cannot deny it is happening. Please, let's not wait until it's too late. Protect our water now.
