“What about me and my family?” asks local resident P. Plover
I believe that the proposed sell-off of lands would include areas used as nesting sites by an endangered species, the Piping Plover. You may ask why we should care about the survival of a little bird of no economic benefit, compared to the survival of the local human community. For one thing, the government-sponsored extinction of a living species is irreversible. No more Piping Plovers - ever. For another, the developments that will go on the lands in question will probably not last forever (can you visualize Mr. Ford as Ozymandias? A jarring image, to be sure), but they will permanently damage and pollute the lands, and they will thwart free public access to areas of natural beauty that attract money-spending visitors to the area. I would love to see the local communities enjoy an economic boost. I just want governments to exercise their imaginations to find novel solutions that don’t involve irremediable death and destruction.
