I am very concerned about the Ontario government's proposed changes to the management and protection of Wasaga Beach and its impact on the piping plover. This endangered bird species requires the unique habitat that is found at Wasaga Beach. Without strong protections, including fencing nesting areas, restricting mechanical raking, and prohibiting dune alteration, the viability of this species will be at risk. Any land transfer must include a strong science-based management plan focused on the conservation and stewardship of the piping plover. Funding, resources, and engagement with experts at the development and implementation stage are crucial to ensure the protection of the natural beach environment and this significant piping plover habitat.
