1. Increasing the number of people choosing cycling as a transportation option demands SAFER cycling. The latter has been noted by potential cyclists as the key variable in their choice. Safe cycling requires investment in infrastructure such as dedicated cycle ways, mountable curbs, painted lanes etc. Government support would help provide those.
2. Only 30% of cyclists in the GTA are female. Infrastructure that provides safer cycling will help increase the % of female riders. The female cohort is a huge untapped resource.
3. Within the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, 35 million trips can be considered "potentially cyclable" (see recent Ryerson study done for Metrolinx). Funding support would help provide the necessary infrasrtrcture.
4.Durham Region has one of the highest potentials for using cycling to access transit because of the proximity of Go Transit services. Yet, there is not a suitably safecycling connection, in Oshawa. to the Go Transit station. The limiting variable is funding for the necessary infrastructure connection.
5. Oshawa is experiencing unprecedented suburban growth as people seek its affordability of housing. It is a great challenge for the city of Oshawa, to provide these new residents in these new subdivisions, with the means of leaving their automobiles and connecting to their various wants and needs in their city, by cycle. This requires significant cycling infrastructure.
6. I support the new density parameters set out in the provinces new growth plan. These proposed densities will help bring increased occupancy to our urban core; will bring a needed vitality to our urban core; and will facilitate the efforts to see more people cycling and walking and choosing public transit, in our city.
