This is another horrible idea put forth by our Ontario government. As someone who has worked at multiple conservation authorities in the past, our conservation authorities are stretched thin and striped of their important power from past Ford government legislation. There isn’t enough money as it is in the important programs for preservation, conservation and safe keeping of both human safety and health as it is. Community building by raising appreciation of local knowledge and local areas? Already cut. Helping endangered species? Already has to be funded completely off of grants to be able to afford the bare minimum of staff for the job. By combining the already stretched staff to even larger areas and likely firing “excess staff” even more important work is going to be deprioritized or dropped completely. Smaller areas that need attention are going to be overlooked and there will be more environmental degradation in Ontario.
