I am unequivocally against this proposal to consolidate Ontario’s conservation authorities. The 36 conservation authorities in Ontario offer incredible services to surrounding communities, each unique to the specific watersheds they work so hard to protect. Educational programs and community outreach are key to helping municipalities understand and respect the natural spaces surrounding them. Ontario’s conservation authorities offer opportunities for locals and visitors alike to learn, engage, and connect with their environment. The reason each conservation authority is so effective is because they are small and unique to their respective area, offering knowledge and programs that differ from their neighbours. Consolidating them for the purpose of “streamlining” permit approvals and governance puts communities at risk. Permit approval SHOULD be tailored to the needs of each watershed. Requests for development SHOULD be taken seriously and reviewed thoroughly, regardless of the time this takes. I urge you to allow Ontario’s 36 conservation authorities to continue operating based on science, environmental integrity, and the needs of their communities.
