I am writing this comment to call on the Government of Ontario to retain the 36 conservation authorities currently serving Ontario and its residents. The plan to merge our 36 conservation authorities to 7 regional authorities will weaken local voices and expertise, sidelong scientific expertise that keep our communities safe. This consolidation will lead to slower response times by creating confusion and relying on slow approvals. This plan will also cause power to be shifted upward away from community-driven governance and towards centralized provincial control, which can only lead to a lack of community specific support.
The current 36 conservation authorities are essential to Ontario’s communities and should be maintained.
