I strongly oppose this proposal and the regional consolidation of Ontario's conservation authorities.
As a resident of southern Ontario, I am extremely concerned that the new proposed boundaries and amalgamation of conservation authorities will degrade the essential, localized work of each conservation authority. The current conservation authority boundaries were established based on the watersheds on the land, and are internationally respected for this reason. To change this system for political and municipal reasons would not be scientifically or ecologically sound, contradicting the purpose and strength of conservation authorities.
To consolidate the work of conservation authorities would have significant negative impacts, not only to nature but to our human communities as well. The local expertise, knowledge, and responsibilities of the current 36 conservation authorities are necessary to maintain the current quality of water, land and soil, wildlife, habitat, and local communities.
Flood risks, watershed science, and wetlands are not obstacles to overcome for development. They are foundational to the health and safety of human and non-human communities who live in Ontario. I do not believe this proposed efficiency to development is worth the cost of risking the health of the land and watersheds, the conservation of critical farmland and natural areas, and the wellbeing and safety of our communities.
I believe a stronger Ontario includes investment in local conservation authorities, not reduction. The only way to support a growing Ontario is through sustainable, local solutions that do not harm the land and communities on which they're built. To me, this proposal reflects ignorance, weakness, and backwards-thinking related to sustainability, ethics, climate resilience, and watershed management.
