A merger of the existing 36 conservation authorities into only 7 (or any smaller of a number) is extremely shortsighted and reckless. Much like municipalities, conservation boards need to be able to focus on the specific issues that are prominent in the region they represent. If a conservation board is tasked with representing (in some cases) over 1,500 kilometres, of which there are hundreds of lakes, rivers, streams, and other important areas, there is no way it can adequately serve those it represents and ensure that the best interests of the environment are taken into consideration.
