I am strongly OPPOSED to the Province’s proposed amalgamation of the Lakehead Region Conservation Authority (LRCA) with six Southern Ontario Conservation Authorities to form the “Huron-Superior Regional Conservation authority.” Such an amalgamation makes no sense, given the completely different watersheds, municipalities, and issues involved, and the great distance between them. Our LRCA has done an excellent job for over 70 years of monitoring the watersheds, preventing flooding, educating the public, and maintaining several Conservation areas, for their protection and the use of the public. Taking away local authority would make these activities much more difficult if not impossible to carry forward. Therefore, I support the LRCA’s proposal that the Lakehead Region Conservation Authority continue as a stand-alone regional conservation authority known as the Northwestern Ontario Regional Conservation Authority.
