This proposal doesn't make any sense to the people of Ontario. Conservation Authorities operate on local knowledge and local relationships using strong and consistent principles. There are many ways to achieve efficiencies and improve front line delivery of services without consolidation. Creating a more complicated governance and a wider region to manage by each CA will only cause delays and cost us the tax payers more money. The current model has worked well for nearly 80 years even as the government of the day continuously cut back funding. What CAs need now is to have stable and predictable funding restored to a sufficient level so they can carry out the good work that they do. Since the province has cut funding, the local municipalities have had to pick up the slack. This is called downloading the responsibility for provincially mandated programs (e.g. flood and drought). By that logic, the only thing the province should be doing is consulting with CAs and their municipalities on what ideas they have to improve their delivery of services. It's becoming a very unpopular move in the media and if the current government wants to be re-elected, it would be smart to drop this consolidation idea and instead provide some reasonable funding to the CAs. Now that would be a political win!
