I do not agree with the proposal for consolidation of the Conservation Authorities (CA). Each CA has local knowledge and expertise in maintaining and protecting local watersheds, floodplains and ecologies within its watershed. This local knowledge is critical in devising effective strategies to address needs within the boundaries of the authorities, and consolidation will break down decades of scientific research, community partnerships and practical on-the-ground experience within the CA.
This Bill will also weaken environmental oversight at a time when climate change is intensifying floods, fires, erosion and extreme weather, and give more power to developers while removing meaningful accountability for environmental protections.
Since the Conservation Authorities are paid for by municipalities within the watershed and NOT the Ontario government, it should have no ability to move forward with this destructive consolidation plan.
