I do not support the consolidation of Ontario's 36 Conservation Authorities into 7 regional agencies. There is no evidence that the merger is needed and if inconsistencies need to be addressed, there are other mechanisms that do no involve a costly, complicated, and needless overhaul. Local decision-making needs to be maintained. These municipal-scale relationships are essential and correspond with the scale of work that is needed, the governance structures, and the funding sources. Conservation authorities work in the best interests of the communities they serve. Do not continue to strip them of the power to do their job. In the context of climate change and increasing risks of flooding and major storm events, we should be strengthening the jurisdiction of conservation authorities to protect our communities, homes, and livelihoods. We do not want another Hurricane Hazel.
