I strongly object to the province’s TOC plans for midtown Oakville. The province and profit driven developers should not ride roughshod over the wishes of Oakville residents. We accept the need for higher densities in the area surrounding the Oakville Go Station. What we cannot accept is the mega density proposed by the province. We are NOT Toronto. We do not want overpopulation and a skyline blighted by 45-56 storey buildings.
The entire midtown area encompasses 103 hectares and will eventually house 38,000 people. So why are 11,000 people being crammed into 5 acres? It sets a dangerous precedent for future development and is not necessary to meet provincial targets. Trafalgar Road, the major arterial roadway, is six lanes and is already operating at capacity. Don’t replicate Toronto’s notorious congestion in our town.
Honour Oakville town council’s comprehensive and detailed plan for midtown, years in the making. It envisions a complete community, not one huddled in one small spot, dependent on the resources of surrounding areas. It is tyrannical for the province to dismiss it.
The group, We Love Oakville, has very succinctly outlined the short-sightedness of the TOC proposal. They have considered density, road networks, congestion, job creation (limited), community facilities, Go Station infrastructure, and implications for future development. Listen carefully. Allow Oakville to plan its future…to create a midtown that permits increased population while maintaining our values.
