I am writing to you concerns about the provincial plans to amalgamate the current 36 conservation authorities into only seven. This was proposed on October 31st by Ontario's Ministry of Environment, Conservation, and Parks.
As someone who appreciates and often utilizes the unique nature we have in Ontario, this proposition is extremely concerning to me. These changes would mean reducing these necessary agencies to 1/5th of their original size. Meaning a reduction in their ability to keep Ontarians safe.
Conservation Authorities protect people and properties from flooding through watershed management and mitigation. This field can be very area specific and people working at conservation authorities have very specific and integral knowledge. Amalgamating these areas would make it more difficult for conservation authorities to provide this essential service to Ontarians. In addition to this conservation authorities reduce flood risks, monitor and preserve water quality, track natural hazards and protect drinking water sources. I am extremely concerned about the negative impacts the proposed changes would have on the conservation authorities' ability to provide these essential services.
