Amalgamating Conservation Authorities in Ontario could do more harm than good because local environments aren’t all the same.
Each authority understands its own rivers, flood risks, and communities. If they’re merged into bigger organizations, decisions are more likely to be made far from the local area, using one-size-fits-all solutions.
That can make it easier for development to override local protections, leading to the loss of wetlands and wildlife habitat that help prevent flooding and support ecosystems.
At a time when these CA's are already strained and at capacity, a plan to cut and combine them seems like a serious threat to our natural spaces.
Residents of the West Credit River felt there was little consultation on the Erin Wastewater plant and the same goes for the Malancthon quarry where residents feel their concerns will be dismissed in favour of business opportunities at the expense of conservation. The province should try to achieve a balance. This proposal is tilts the scale away from conservation.
